A 34-year-old businessman was collared by joint elements of the CIDG, PNP local units, Phillip Morris Fortune Tabacco Corporation (PMFTC), Inc., and Japan Tobacco International Philippines, Inc. in a buy-bust operation for reselling counterfeit cigarettes on Friday, October 8, 2021, in Samal, Bataan.
MARK KALVIN SANTA MARIA BERNARDO was caught in the act of receiving the marked money from a police undercover. He was found in possession and control of Php285,600.00 worth of said to be fake cigarettes consisting of seventy-two reams of Marlboro brand, eighty-three reams of Fortune brand, thirty-nine reams of Mighty Menthol brand, thirty-eight reams of Jackpot brand, fifteen reams of Marvel brand, and marked and boodle money.
A case for violation of RA 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) was filed before the Bataan Provincial Prosecutors’ Office against the suspect who is currently detained at CIDG Bataan PFU.
“Economic sabotage, whether small time or big time, still affects our economy. We are mandated to take action against these saboteurs by hampering them to continue their illegal activities and put them behind bars,” says CIDG Director, PMGen Albert Ignatius D Ferro.
